In case you didn't know, telnet and FTP are very insecure. They send
passwords in clear text (i.e. they don't encrypt) over the Internet.
Moreover, there is recent reason to believe that certain versions of
telnet cannot safely be run on servers. For this reason, we have shut
off telnet and FTP access to our server, oedipus.umd.edu. You can
still login remotely using ssh, and you can still dofile transfers
using scp.
You can get the free and semi-official ssh client for windoze at
ftp://ftp.ssh.com/pub/ssh/
You should look for a file called something like
"LATEST-IS-SSH-SOME-VERSION-NUMBER", where SOME-VERSION-NUMBER will be
something like 3.2.3. As of March 3, the executable file you will want
is SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.3.exe. Note that this software is free for
educational (but not commercial) use.
